Full disclosure: For eight years I was employed by a seminar company to travel the United States and present group hypnosis seminars to people who wanted to either Lose Weight or Quit Smoking. We did two seminars a day, one for helping people quit smoking, the second to help people lose weight. Attendees who wanted to do both could only do one. Focusing on just one of those two outcomes made success far more likely. We recommended quitting smoking first because, of course, smoking is so very bad for you.
So you might be interested in knowing that there is good news and bad news about group hypnosis seminars.
The good news, these seminars are extremely effective in helping people quit smoking. The success rate is very high for the quit-smoking group. The bad news is that they usually don’t work for weight loss UNLESS a very critical piece is included. Sadly, in most hypnosis group seminars, it usually is not included.
Fortunately, being forewarned is being forearmed. The 5 Realities about Hypnosis and Weight Loss I am about to share with you will make it possible to utilize the tremendous power of hypnosis when it comes to creating new healthy habits and (finally) lose weight and keep it off.
Reality #1 – Hypnosis by it self won’t make you thin
You will still need to alter your eating habits and exercise more. Hypnosis will help that happen but you will still be involved. Especially at the outset. The new habits get easier as time goes on but at first there is some effort and will power required. Some people have the mistaken impression that if you get hypnotized everything just happens for you and you can sit back, relax and enjoy watching the pounds melt away.
Reality #2 – You don’t need herbs or vitamins to lose weight.
Some hypnosis companies make most of their money on the proverbial back table, selling vitamins and various pills or powders that they will tell you are required to block fat, etc. You don’t. You need to change the way you think and react to triggers. Hypnosis will do that for you.
Reality #3 – Everyone can be hypnotized. (This means You)
No doubt about it. You can use hypnosis to improve your life. Milton Erickson was perhaps the first to notice that we live in one trance or another. The question is not whether you can go into trance or not, the question is can you install healthy useful trances in place of the old, problem causing trances. As an example, having your unconscious mind learn to respond to stress by taking deep breaths or stretching will be FAR healthier for you that the old trance of handling stress with chocolate.
Reality #4 – Diets don’t work.
Especially this time of year there are always the usual onslaught of the latest, greatest diet books. This year’s crop includes such titles as “The new Atkins diet made easy” that promises a loss of “up to 15 pounds in two weeks.” Other titles you’ll find at bookstores now are “Weight Loss for People who Feel too much,” “The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet,” and “The 17 Day Diet Breakthrough Edition.” All of them promise to teach you the secret to quick and massive weight loss. Of course if all of last year’s new books had worked, we wouldn’t need a new batch this year. Radical, abrupt dietary changes rarely stick. People soon tire of the restrictions and revert to their old dietary habits.
Reality #5 – The one universal, essential factor for permanent weight loss is creating new habits, reinforced over time.
What you need to do is create new and healthy habits of eating and exercise. Education as to what that means is, of course, important, but everyone is different so there is no one single prescription of what or how to eat. People’s differences must be taken into account and adjustments made along the way. Habits are not acquired over night and it takes time to inculcate new healthier ones. Hypnosis is a key ingredient in doing this.
